Want to upgrade your current SQL Server to 2019? Lets take a look at it today.

Here is what you need to know before proceeding you can upgrade to SQL 2019 if you are running the following versions

  • Server 2012 (11.x)
  • Server 2014 (12.x)
  • Server 2016 (13.x)
  • Server 2017 (14.x)

Before moving on ensure that you have a complete backup of the server before upgrading. This will ensure that you can restore to the previous configuration should the upgrade fails.

Should you decide not to backup and proceed with the upgrade, it is at your own risk.

Note: From SQL Server 2017 onward, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is a separate installation. If you have SSRS for enabled for verisons prior to 2017 you will need to perform the following as it will be uninstalled

  • Backup the Report Server Database
  • Backup the encryption key
  • Install the new Reporting Services
  • Migrate reports

From SQL Server 2016 onward, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is a separate installation. If you are running SQL versions verisons prior to 2016 you will need to Download and install SSMS

Upgrading SQL Server

  1. Insert or Mount the Installation Media and launch Setup.exe

2. Select Installation and click on Upgrade from a previous version of SQL Server

3. Enter the product key and click Next >

4. Accept the license terms and click Next >

5. Click Next >

6. Ensure that you have done the necessary backup for Reporting Services. Check Uninstall Reporting Services and Click Next >

7. Click Next > for the remaining pages

8. Select your prefered upgrade option and click Next >

9. Click Upgrade

10. Click OK

11. Click Close

And the upgrade of SQL Server is completed
